Poppers

Substance

Poppers contain various substances such as amyl nitrite/butyl nitrite etc. and consist mainly of additives and flavourings.

This is a volatile liquid that is explosive in an air mixture. Poppers are inhaled from small bottles (must not be drunk under any circumstances - risk of death!).

Poppers were and in some instances still are used in cardiac and obstetric medicine and for the treatment of angina pectoris.

Effects

A very brief high, lasting approximately 3 - 5 minutes, begins immediately on inhaling. Feelings of warmth and dizziness and racing heart beat have been described. The face and upper body become flushed.

The following may occur: pronounced break-down of inhibitions, reduced sensitivity to pain, heightened sensitivity to touch, increased enjoyment of sex, greater feeling of intimacy, relaxation of the muscles.

Short-term side effects

Poppers drastically reduce the blood pressure.

Tickling in the throat, racing heart beat and feeling of heat on the skin, irritations of the skin and mucous membranes are possible. Due to the lack of oxygen supply to the brain, headaches may occur. Depending on the dose, brief loss of consciousness is possible.

Overdose may lead to rapid fall in blood pressure - the blood flow to the brain may be affected - stroke and permanent paralysis is possible.

Long-term side effects

Burning of the nasal mucous membranes, disturbance of the cardiac rhythm may be triggered by frequent use.
Regular use over a long period of time may lead to impotence and psychological dependency.

Interaction with other drugs

Dangerous interaction with other medicines and drugs that also affect the cardio-vascular system is possible.
Do not take poppers at the same time as Viagra as both substances significantly reduce blood pressure.

Safer use

Do not under any circumstances use in the event of disturbance of the cardiac rhythm, anaemia or low blood pressure.

Practise safer sex.

If the substance comes into contact with mucous membranes or eyes, rinse immediately and consult a doctor.

Keep poppers out of the light, where possible, and keep in the freezer as the substance will decay at room temperature and have a reduced effect.

Do not open ice-cold bottles, but wait to use until the popper bottle has warmed up a little.

Poppers are flammable, so be very careful with lighters, cigarettes, etc.

Your nose is the best test of quality. Clean poppers have a slight, fruity fragrance while old poppers smell foul (due to the decomposition products).
